School update - EHCP review

Happy and ready for school

This morning I had an EHCP review with Z’s school teacher. I have to say I’m really proud of him.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the review, because of the pandemic our interactions with the school are pretty minimal, just a quick “has he had a good day?” as he’s bundled into the car. No fault of the schools, they’re doing the best they can to keep the kids safe, which means not much interaction with the parents. But, I’ve had a lot of questions to ask.

We always try to have a laugh
before the staff collect him from the car.
It started with his teacher asking a few questions about how he’s getting on at home, sleeping, eating, behaviour etc. We do have a few issues at the moment with getting Z to wind down before bed time and saying “no” A LOT, among other things but, they’re issues we’re working through and learning about. However, it was brilliant to hear how well he’s settled at school, despite the lockdown disruption. His teacher said he’s really grown in confidence, he joins in in class, even going to the front of the class to talk or point things out on the interactive whiteboard.

I found out that he even does things there that he won’t do at home. Often Z won’t eat meals by himself and instead asks me or his Dad for help (quite often he’s distracted with other things in the room). So, to hear that he sits at the independent table to eat was pretty good news, seeing the other kids cracking on must really help him to join in. Also, she told me that he'll happily go in and wash his hands every morning and he uses the bathroom on his own. Why won't he do that at home?? Kids! Honestly, asking him to wash his hands at home is such a big drama.

Despite there being gaps in his assessments due to school being shut for such a huge amount of the school year, his teacher is confident that he’ll be caught up by next year. It was so good to hear about how well he's settled in, it makes me absolutely confident that we made the right decision to send him to a SEN school. Knowing he is happy and enjoying his first year at school makes all the difference, and I can't wait to see him smash all his targets for the next year.
